A popular trend nowadays is to have a nice banner at the top of every post published on a blog. This helps set the tone and create an emotional response with the reader. In previous years it was more common to use photography for these banners or featured images, and it is indeed still a very good idea to use photography. However in more design or tech oriented blogs icons are all the rage at the moment. Here are the best stock icon sites I use on a regular basis.
Iconfinder
This is my favourite stock icon site, chock full of amazing icons and illustrations. You can purchase the unlimited downloads package for just $29/month which is excellent value if you blog regularly.
Flaticon
Flaticon is an excellent resource for vector icons. This site is perfect for finding high quality vector icons and fonts. What makes Flaticon noteworthy is that it comes with a free Photoshop plugin, which will help you find and use icons without needing to leave the application.
This site currently has many thousands of free icons in their database.
Noun Project
The Noun Project was founded by the husband and wife team of Edward Boatman and Sofya Polyakov, launched in 2010 with a handful number of icon sets and has since become one of the best sites for download quality icons.
Shutterstock
One of the long-standing giants of stock photography and illustrations.
